An Open Letter From a Former Youth Apprentice
Hello!
My name is Lizzy Klein. I am a professional artist, and I am an artist because of 1001 Colors.
I was 16 and 1001 Colors was my very first job as an Apprentice, working under a tent in Eden Park. I worked on the Katie’s Kingdom mural for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and The Doors Project for the Freedom Center. On Katie’s Kingdom, I remember creating sketches and plans that ultimately made it into the final mural design.
Completing a project of that scale filled me with pride, and more importantly, it taught me the value of showing up, following through, and finishing work to the highest level of my ability. 1001 Colors instilled in me a sense of integrity and professionalism, showing me that art could be a legitimate, serious career that lets you support yourself while expressing who you are.
After 1001 Colors, I studied animation at CalArts. The program felt familiar in the best way: most of my teachers were working artists who taught by example and shared their passion. I graduated in 2013 with a BFA in Experimental Animation and began working in the art departments of several stop-motion animation studios in Los Angeles. I moved up quickly into Art Direction, working on projects for Disney, DreamWorks, Warner Brothers, and Nickelodeon. I’m certain my success is directly linked to my experience at 1001 Colors, especially the opportunity to see creative projects through from start to finish.
In 2022, I returned home to Cincinnati, continuing my work in animation. One of the most meaningful parts of coming back has been seeing how 1001 Colors has transformed the city, filling neighborhoods with public art and strengthening the community.
Every year, 1001 Colors interviews more than 300 young people and employs nearly 200. Many go on to become professional artists through 1001 Colors' career pathways just like I did. I know without a doubt that I wouldn’t be where I am today without 1001 Colors.
