Some stories deserve more than a place in history books. They deserve to live boldly in our communities, inspiring future generations every day.
That is the vision behind the Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Mural Series, a statewide public art project honoring the courage, service, and groundbreaking achievements of Ohio’s Tuskegee Airmen while connecting communities across the state through art, education, and shared history.
With generous support from America 250-Ohio, 1001 Colors is bringing these powerful stories to life through 13 portrait murals honoring Tuskegee Airmen from Ohio. The murals will be installed in communities across Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron, and beyond, creating a lasting tribute to some of the nation’s most remarkable heroes.
Today, we are excited to share a first look at the artists’ mural designs and the powerful stories behind this statewide tribute.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces. During World War II, at a time when racial segregation and discrimination limited opportunities for Black Americans, these pilots, mechanics, navigators, and support personnel proved that ability, determination, and courage could overcome barriers.
Their achievements challenged long-held assumptions about race and military service, helped pave the way for the integration of the Armed Forces, and opened doors for generations who followed.
What many people don't realize is that Ohio has a significant connection to Tuskegee Airmen history. Several Tuskegee Airmen were born in Ohio or made their homes here, serving their country with distinction and making lasting contributions to aviation, the military, and their communities.
Their stories are Ohio stories. Their legacy is part of our shared history.
Through public art, these heroes will become visible reminders of the courage, perseverance, and excellence that helped shape our nation.
We are honored to share an exclusive preview of the first mural designs from the artists participating in the Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Mural Series.
Each design offers a unique interpretation of these heroes while celebrating their service, accomplishments, and lasting impact. Together, they will transform public spaces across Ohio into places where history is not only remembered, but experienced.
The artists selected for the Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Mural Series bring unique perspectives, personal connections, and creative approaches to honoring these extraordinary Americans.
For Cincinnati artist Jeni Jenkins, the opportunity was a chance to celebrate the excellence and resilience of Black servicemen who served their country despite facing discrimination.
“I was excited to honor the excellence of Black servicemen, especially these men who broke barriers, performed their duty under racial prejudice, and were treated as second-class citizens.”
Cleveland artist Aaron Williams sees projects like this as more than a way to preserve history.
“Projects like the Tuskegee Airmen Mural Series are important because they do more than preserve history; they continue it.”
For Cleveland artist Jerome T. White, the project carries a personal connection. His grandfather, Fred J. Brown, served as a physical education instructor for Tuskegee Airmen trainees.
“Every brushstroke is an expression of gratitude and remembrance, a way of giving visual form to their courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in a future that had yet to recognize their greatness.”
Akron artist Allan Lunda also shared a deeply personal connection to the project. The son of Tuskegee Airman Edward Lunda, Allan completed his design as a tribute to his father before passing in April 2026. His vision will live on through the work of the 1001 Colors Youth Apprentice team, who are helping bring his design to life.
Cincinnati artist Javarri Lewis rounds out this talented group of Ohio creatives helping transform powerful historical narratives into vibrant public artwork that communities can experience every day.
As the series continues to take shape, Ohioans will have the opportunity to encounter these stories in their own neighborhoods, sparking curiosity, conversation, and connection with the people who helped shape our state and our nation.
