Join 1001 Colors and the Herrmann family for a special evening celebrating the dedication of the Frank Herrmann Legacy Mural, Buoyant Vessel, a new public artwork developed in collaboration with acclaimed Cincinnati artist, educator, and mentor Frank Herrmann. Inspired by the imagery, forms, and visual language found throughout his decades-long body of work, the mural transforms Frank's former Northside studio building into a lasting reflection of his artistic vision and influence.
Frank had the opportunity to see the mural painted and realized before his passing, making this dedication a celebration of a project he helped bring to life.
Following the mural dedication, guests are invited to continue the evening at the Frank Herrmann Legacy Art Auction, featuring original works donated by an extraordinary group of artists from across the country whose lives, careers, and creative practices were shaped by Frank's mentorship, teaching, friendship, and artistic influence.

About Frank Herrmann
Frank Herrmann was a beloved Cincinnati artist, educator, and mentor whose work and influence shaped generations of artists and creatives. As Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), Frank taught at the university beginning in 1973, dedicating more than 40 years to teaching, inspiring, and supporting emerging artists.
Frank discovered his love of painting while studying at Western Kentucky University, where he earned his BFA. He went on to pursue his MFA at the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP program before teaching at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. In 1973, he returned to Cincinnati to join the University of Cincinnati as an adjunct instructor of Fine Arts and was hired as an assistant professor the following year.
A prolific painter, Frank’s work can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His artistic practice earned recognition at both the local and national levels, including Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships in 1983, 1986, and 2001; an Arts Midwest NEA Fellowship in 1990; and Summerfair Individual Artist Fellowships in 1983 and 2000. In 2001, he was awarded a residency at Castle Cimelice in Czechia through the Ohio Arts Council and the Foundation and Center for Contemporary Art, Prague. In 2006, he received a prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship.
Throughout his career, Frank remained deeply committed to his art, his students, and the broader creative community. His legacy continues through his paintings, his teaching, and the countless artists he inspired and mentored throughout his life
