Curation & Artist Calls

Curation & Artist Calls

Build Meaningful Creative Opportunities With Care and Intention

1001 Colors provides thoughtful curation and inclusive artist call services that support artists, partners, and communities through equitable, intentional creative processes. We believe how work is framed and how artists are selected matters just as much as the final outcome.

Whether you are developing an exhibition, launching an artist opportunity, or seeking guidance for a creative initiative, we partner with organizations and institutions to ensure processes are clear, accessible, and rooted in respect for artistic labor and community context.

Our Approach

Our work in curation and artist calls is grounded in care, clarity, and access. We prioritize transparency, thoughtful communication, and alignment with project goals so artists can engage with confidence and partners can trust the process.

Every project begins with understanding your goals, audience, and context. From there, we design processes that balance artistic excellence, equity, and practical implementation.

Curation

Our curatorial work centers artists, context, and connection. We collaborate with partners to shape exhibitions and creative projects that elevate diverse voices, reflect place‑based stories, and invite meaningful public engagement.

Curation services may include:

  • Exhibition or project development
  • Thematic framing and storytelling
  • Artist selection and coordination
  • Interpretation and audience experience planning

Each curatorial approach is tailored to the site, audience, and goals of the project, ensuring the work is experienced with intention and relevance.

Artist Calls

1001 Colors designs and manages artist calls that are inclusive, clear, and artist‑centered. We support the full process, from early planning through final communication, helping partners navigate artist selection with transparency and care.

Artist call services may include:

  • Call development and outreach strategy
  • Application design and guidance
  • Review process and selection support
  • Clear communication with applicants at every stage

Artist calls are structured to reduce barriers, encourage broad participation, and reflect the communities connected to the work. We prioritize clarity around expectations, compensation, timelines, and selection criteria.

Artist calls may support murals and public art, exhibitions, residencies, fellowships, or other creative opportunities, depending on partner needs.

What Guides Our Work

Across curation and artist calls, our work is guided by:

  • Equity and access throughout the process
  • Transparency and respect in artist communication
  • Care for artists’ time, voice, and labor
  • Alignment with community context and project goals

These services are an extension of our commitment to building pathways for artists while supporting creative work that is authentic and impactful.

Do you have a specific location for your project concept? If so, please provide the address below.

Project placement is very important for a variety of reasons. Placement can help inspire creative direction, size of the location helps determine an appropriate budget and helps ArtWorks employ the right size team for production. If you do not have a specific location in mind, please share your desired project placement with us (i.e. neighborhood, district, city, etc.).

Budget *

ArtWorks relies on partnerships for funding our projects. Typically, an ArtWorks exterior mural project costs $30,000 - $100,000 depending on size of project, site preparations, team size, etc. Other types of projects such as smaller scale interior murals, sculpture, etc. can go below or above this range. Are you able to provide financial support for this project? We know that sometimes securing funds may require fundraising, so it is okay if you do not have the funds currently. However, we ask that you identify a budget that you would be able to commit to.

Desired Production Timeline

Typical ArtWorks projects require planning for 8 - 12 months before project production. Factors that can impact timeline are fundraising, site availability, complexity of the work, desired artist, etc. Is your project time sensitive?
