History is filled with stories of courage, perseverance, and people who changed what was possible. Too many of those stories, however, remain hidden.
As part of America 250, 1001 Colors is bringing Ohio’s Tuskegee Airmen legacy to life through a statewide public art initiative celebrating courage, service, perseverance, and the power of connection.
The Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Mural Series honors the extraordinary Ohioans who helped redefine what was possible through their service during World War II and beyond. Through 13 original portrait murals created by celebrated Ohio-based artists Jeni Jenkins, Javarri Lewis, Jerome T. White, Aaron D. Williams, and Allan Lunda (posthumously), these stories will become permanent landmarks across Ohio, including Cincinnati, Cleveland, Akron, and surrounding communities.
At the center of this initiative is the Heilbrun & Leahr Mural, a 3,000-square-foot public artwork designed by internationally acclaimed artist Conrad Egyir that honors the remarkable friendship between Cincinnati pilots John H. Leahr and Herb Heilbrun. Their story connects two World War II aviators whose lives took very different paths, but ultimately came together through service, respect, and a shared commitment to something greater than themselves.
The courage, determination, and legacy of these American Servicemen deserve more than a chapter in a book. They deserve to be seen witin our community, discovered by the next generation, and remembered long after the paint dries.
From a 3,000-square-foot mural in downtown Cincinnati honoring John Leahr and Herb Heilbrun to 13 portrait murals being installed across Ohio, this initiative transforms history into public landmarks that invite everyone to pause, learn, and connect.

The Tuskegee Airmen Legacy Mural Series puts young artists at the center of preserving history.
Working alongside professional muralists, 1001 Colors Summer Youth Apprentices are creating large-scale, world-class public artwork that will inspire communities across Ohio for years to come. Through every stage of production, these artists are learning what it means to work professionally, collaborate, solve problems, and bring a vision from concept to completion.
Along the way, they are discovering stories of courage and achievement that many people may never encounter in a classroom. By transforming these histories into vibrant public art, young artists are helping ensure the legacy of Ohio’s Tuskegee Airmen is seen, remembered, and carried forward.
The vision for this initiative is ambitious: a statewide collection of murals honoring Ohio’s Tuskegee Airmen, a landmark Cincinnati tribute to John Leahr and Herb Heilbrun, and a hands-on creative experience empowering the next generation of artists.
This vision is becoming reality because of the community of supporters who believe these stories matter and understand the power of public art to educate, inspire, and connect generations.
